Japan International Welding Show 2016 Held in Osaka High-performance, High-value-added Products and Technology under One Roof An International Show Bursting with Energy and Interest

The photos depict scenes from the Japan International Welding Show 2016 (organized by the Japan Welding Engineering Society and Sanpo Publications), held at Intex Osaka in Suminoe Ward, Osaka City over four days from April 13 to 16. The main theme of this year’s show was “Welding and Joining Technology are Revolutionizing Manufacturing.” Attracted by the opportunity to survey high-performance, high-value-added products and technology from Japan and the rest of the world, all under one roof, a record 88,000 visitors attended the event. The show was a resounding success.

At the opening ceremony, Japan Welding Engineering Society (JWES) president Takashi Miyata, representing the organizers, pointed out that exhibitors at this year’s Japan International Welding Show (JIWS) in Osaka was 10% more than at the previous JIWS in Osaka, clearly reflecting the progress of welding technology. He also expressed his hope that the event would serve to stimulate further exchange in welding technology across Asia, to help in establishing a large, common Asia-wide welding market and in creating business networks in the region. Next, the president of Sanpo Publications, Yutaka Kukita, expressed the organizer’s confidence that JIWS has all the features and qualities to qualify as a “hub trade show” for Asia, highlighting the importance of the show for the manufacturing industry—not just in Japan but the whole of Asia. It is particularly noteworthy that along with the presence of major corporations from Japan and abroad, a remarkable 30% of the exhibitors were companies new to JIWS. There were also products on exhibit from a further 33 companies from 15 countries, who despite not being directly present were represented by local subsidiaries or sales agents. This too helped to make the event a very international and lively one.

Some of the more outstanding offerings at the show included the spectacular demonstrations of welding equipment and skills, which have become a major feature of JIWS, the widely viewed displays of materials processing technology for automobile production, focused on the theme of weight-saving—an important requirement of today’s automobiles—and presentations of revolutionary processes combining welding consumables with welding power supplies and devices, as well as of welding robot systems incorporating vision sensors. Another interesting aspect of the show was the large number of presentations on the application of fiber lasers, which vividly revealed the rapid spread of applications technology for these devices.

On top of all this, another attraction of JIWS 2016 was the Skills Transfer Plaza featuring welding demonstrations by 10 expert and master welders. The aim of communicating the importance of skills transfer through demonstrations by accomplished welding professionals was very successfully met, as the event captured the interest of many show visitors, who were greatly impressed by the superlative skills shown by the welders.
